The tuatara is an extremely rare reptile only found in New Zealand. It resembles a lizard but is part of a distinct lineage, “Rhynchocephalia” order. Tuatara are the only surviving members of this order which flourished in the dinosaur age around 200 million years ago. Tuatara are also called “living fossils”.
